Show Me your Hot Plate Lunch

So what goes in each person's lunch box everyday? How many of you prefer to take lunch from home and how many of you prefer eating out? What do you take for lunch?Would you mind leaving a comment for lunch box ideas?
Meeta at the Daily Tiffin had made an event out of it "Show us your lunchbox" and it would be great if we can make it a full blown event.
So let me know if you guys still want to participate.
These are a series of simple lunch boxes that was made for my cafeteria phobic first grader. He threatens to pack a peanut butter and jam sandwich by himself if I don't give him a lunch box.:) I am enjoying this till the day he turns around and says he doesn't want my food anymore. I am sure middle school will soon lure him away from home food.
So today its just a bagel, a kind of thick bread with flavored cream cheese and some strawberries and grapes.

Update 3/24/07
As some of the ladies who finely lunch at home (making me envious) we can change the contributions to show me your hot plate lunch. Will I get any contributers?

  1. Nice idea Shaheen. But when office is near home, lunch is at home every single day! What do ones like me do then?

  2. Last night's leftovers! So no lunch box, just reheat and eat. :D

Your first grader is a joy! I try to convince mine that she really likes the hot lunch at school but she's getting picky. And her class is always late getting to the 'Finer Diner' so she never has enough time to eat. Not that she minds. But if I packed her anything like what Meeta packs (I'd give my right arm for lunchboxes like that!), most of it will come right back. She needs food that will slide down her throat with minimal chewing. So it's PBJ, bologna sandwich, sometimes mac & cheese in a hot thermos. A cookie and water. There's just no point doing anything more as it will all just come right back untouched.

So I worry more about the snack she eats once she gets home. And believe it or not, for those ideas, I do come to The Daily Tiffin! So thanks a ton for all the effort you folks put in!

  8. I do carry a lunch box, will click it for sure.

By the way I tried your Baked Samosa, the kids absolutely loved it and so did the adults. Did not have tortilla so used chappathis instead, had guests over and it was gone before I could take a picture. But this is going to be a regular I can tell.

  9. Well I have a recipe for you which I preferred for quick fix lunch when i was working. Now I am stay at home mom with 4 yrs old and 2yrs old boys.
The recipe for that wrap is:
You take regular flour tortilla (or the health conscious can go for whole wheat or spinach or tomato flavoured ones)
    homemade chickpea hummus.
    some baby spinach
if you like yours spicy than some jalapenos
    onion sliced
cheese slice any if you prefer
    tomato sliced
    black olives
    and olive oil
What you do is spread the hummus on tortilla and put some spinach leaves, onion slices, tomato slices, jalapenos, black olives and cheese slice and wrap like a burrito and you will have a complete meal in that wrap.
Not only is that healthy but it can be done in minutes.
I have recently started my blog zaayka do visit. I have posted some healthy nutritious recipes.

  11. Not very exciting Shaheen as I had said earlier too
Usually Chapati, sabzi & dal for us or salad & Dal

For my 3 year old very limited choices too, she is not the adventurous eater yet

Maybe for your pic I will have to make exciting stuff once in a while :) And maybe for the pic I can coax hubby to get cute Bento Boxes too. Ok so let me go shopping first and then I will make lunch :)

  14. I'm brand new in US and this whole lunch box issue is quite new for me, since in Brasil kids always have lunch at home... My boys wants lunch from home, but I'm facing some difficulties on sending food that must be kept warm... those thermos are good only for some types of food, am I right? Is there any kind of lunch box that keeps food warm? I really accepts any suggestion and will bookmark this blog! :o)
